A task during my internship with Malmö University Associate Senior Lecturer Lizette Reitsma and the interdisciplinary research project Indigenous Climate Observatories was to collaboratively ideate and create a design process model illustrating the process that was used during the research project. This task required researching design processes and collaborating with Lizette. The creation of a design process then evolved into a toolbox, illustrating the project’s process while also providing tools that could potentially be utilised by those who are interested in creating their own collaborative climate observatory. The toolbox provides material that can be used for those who are starting a similar project, or for those who have their own climate observatory and want to reflect on the process they employed. The illustration of the shell is the design process model and the printed illustrations (placed next to the shell in the image above) represent the five steps in the project. The toolbox was tested during prototype sessions, and the format of the toolbox and the content was iterated on based on testing insights. The limitation of the toolbox lies in the methods for testing, since the toolbox was tested on other interaction design students, who had not prior to testing expressed an interest in creating their own observatory. What was tested during the sessions was the content and design of the toolbox. Therefore, the toolbox is not a representation of the actual user group. The reason for this was due to time shortage and logistical reasons. Therefore, the actual benefit and potential of the toolbox is to be determined through implementation. The main learnings from this task are shaping and creating a design process and practicing graphical design skills.
