Tech and/or Tools

Outdoor running is a popular and easily accessible form of physical activity. However, it comes with the drawback of numerous running-related injuries. Many of these injuries stem from an unstable core. This project explored a potential design solution that had the aim of enhancing runners’ body awareness and tacit knowledge regarding core stability when running. A possible design solution was explored and tested using a wearable belt equipped with EMG sensors (wizard-of-oz) and haptic feedback, along with a corresponding application with concept videos for the user. The design solution focused on the phases before, during, and after running. The conclusions drawn from testing the possible design solution indicated that the overall concept of emphasizing body awareness can have a positive impact on the runner's perception of their training and body, as evidenced by user testing. However, further exploration is needed to assess the long-term effects of the design solution and its feasibility for implementation. Learnings from project consists of using microcontrollers (Arduino) and haptic vibration motors in a physical prototype, and adapting the shape and form of the physical prototype to the technology used. Also, involving experts throughout the project and basing my design on their expertise.
